Essential Oils for Travel

Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.
Anita Desai

Traveling is fun, educational – and sometimes challenging. There is the constant movement, the person coughing on your airplane, the question of whether you’re going to bring home any uninvited pests from the bedding, and in more remote locales, the uncertainty about the safety of your food and water.

That’s why I always travel with my assortment of wonderful oils from Young Living. They help me to feel confident that I can handle just about any situation. And, I can help my companions or people that I meet along the way. They are my portable bottles of magic.

Soothing travel turbulence

Sometimes the phrase, ‘Getting there is half the fun’ just doesn’t apply.

For those times when you are feeling unsettled, ground and calm yourself with these oils.

AromaEase™ is a beautiful blend of peppermint leaf oil, spearmint leaf extract, ginger root oil, cardamom seed oil, and fennel seed oil. Inhale it and rub it on your solar plexus chakra to restore a sense of stability and balance.

Peppermint oil is cooling and can be used to support deep breathing, which helps to calm any situation.

Supporting your immune system

Young Living offers many oils that help to support our immune system. Two of my favorites for taking on the plane are Thieves® essential oil blend and lemon essential oil. You can put either one on your hands and also bring an extra sense of freshness to your space by wiping down or spritzing the air vent, tray table, arm rests, etc. with these oils.

Thieves® smells spicy which sometimes brings questions or comments from people (“Who’s chewing cinnamon gum?”). This can be an opportunity to introduce others to the magic of Young Living essential oils. Lemon smells clean, and lifts people’s moods. Some ‘oilers’ like to use Purification™, which also has a fresh scent.

Damping down digestive drama

Part of the joy of travel is eating the local cuisine. While you are enjoying new ingredients and flavors, you’ll also want to ensure that your meal is beneficial and healthy for you. I like to accompany my meals with DiGize™ essential oil blend, which has oils in it, such as fennel, anise, tarragon, ginger and peppermint, from herbs that traditionally have been used to support healthy digestion.

Sometimes when we travel, our digestive systems seem to slow down, and this can feel like it weighs us down. This is why I bring these three key digestive supports:

  1. ComforTone capsules – contain an effective combination of herbs and essential oils that support the health of the digestive system by eliminating residues from the colon and enhancing its natural ability to function optimally)
  2. Detoxzyme capsules – combine powerful enzymes that promote the body’s digestion, detoxification, and cleansing
  3. Life 9 – a proprietary, high-potency probiotic which combines 17 billion live cultures from 9 beneficial bacteria strains that promote healthy digestion, support gut health, and help maintain normal intestinal function for overall support of a healthy immune system. Life 9 is specially designed with special delayed-release capsules to ensure that the cultures reach your colon intact.

Soothing muscle soreness

Unless you are a total free spirit, your travel likely will include lugging a purse, backpack, laptop case, briefcase, duffel bag, or suitcase. Even with wheels, you’ll still be dragging them through airports, lifting them in and out of overhead bins, off luggage carousels, and so forth. Add the subtle stress of sitting for long periods in a cramped airplane seat, and you may find that you have some muscle soreness. Or your feet may ache from walking long distances to see the sights.

That’s where your Young Living oils come to the rescue! Such a small bottle that can do so much. There are many oils that help with muscle aches. Here are my favorites for travel:

  • Deep Relief™ roll-on – easy to apply and already in a vegetable oil base
  • PanAway® – the classic for easing minor, everyday exercise-related muscle stress
  • Lavender and peppermint – this combination is quite effective, and feels ‘tingle-icious.’ Makes a great foot rub!

Freshening your hotel room

Nothing feels better after a long day of travel or sight-seeing than a comfy bed. You’ll rest even more comfortably when you have used your oils to ensure that the room is as fresh as possible.

I like to bring a couple of empty spray bottles. Once at my hotel, I fill them with water and add essential oils. To help make sure the bedding is fresh, I like to use lemongrass and/or Thieves® to spritz the sheets and pillows. If you are concerned about the cleanliness of the bedding, you might use oregano to spritz the sheets; its powerful scent deters unwanted visitors.

Lemongrass and Thieves® also make a nice room freshening spray. Or, you can mix up some lemon, lavender, peppermint, or Purification™. These mixes can be used on the carpet, chairs, and in the bathroom.

Those of you who are sensitive to energy may bring along some White Angelica™ to harmonize the energies in the room.
